Laurel, MD – [August 8, 2024] Mayor Keith R. Sydnor and the Department of Community Resources and Emergency Management announce that portions of the City of Laurel are expected to experience hazardous conditions due to the approaching Tropical Storm Debby and encourage residents to prepare.
Tropical Storm Debby, with sustained winds of 45 mph, is expected to move across the City of Laurel as early as midnight tonight, continuing through 6 p.m. on Friday. The storm is expected to bring 2 to 4 inches of rainfall, which poses a risk of scattered flash flooding, particularly along the I-95 corridor. Additionally, the combination of strong winds and saturated grounds could lead to downed trees, power lines, and power outages. Forecasters are also closely monitoring the potential threat of tornadoes from late Thursday night into Friday afternoon.
Citizens are advised to:
- Charge cell phones;
- Fill or top off gas tanks in vehicles;
- Have flashlights and radios on hand;
- Check radios, flashlights, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers for proper operation;
- Have a week’s supply of prescription medicines to keep you, your family and pets well;
- Have a supply of non-perishable foods and drinking water on hand;
- Never operate gas powered generators indoors or inside a garage;
- Maintain perishable foods at safe temperatures during extended power outages;
- Check cancellations or closings before traveling to social gatherings, medical appointments, sporting events, or the airport; and
