Emergency Preparedness Month Week 1: Make a Plan

National Preparedness Month Week 1: September 1 - 9, 2023

Being an older American may require additional planning for emergencies. Be sure to take the time to plan ahead for any specific needs you may have.

When planning you should consider:

  • Having a plan for transportation if you need help evacuating.
  • Having an extra supply of any medications or medical devices you may need.
  • If a medical device is required, how will you operate and maintain that device outside of the home environment.
  • How will you communicate, if normal communication methods are not operational.

Being prepared for an emergency can be stressful enough! Ensuring your pet is taken care of during an emergency can allow you to make easier and quicker decisions during an emergency. Not being prepared to care for your pet during an emergency can result in your pet being lost, injured, or worse.

When making an emergency plan for your pets you should include the following:

  • Have an evacuation plan for your pet. Many public shelters and hotels do not allow pets. Research a safe place where you can take your pet before a disaster or emergency happens.
  • Microchip your pet. Keep your address and phone number up to date, include an emergency contact outside of your immediate area.
  • Contact your local Emergency Management representative. They can provide additional information and advice if you are unsure of how to care for your pet in case of an emergency.
