AWARE Flood Monitoring System

The AWARE Flood Monitoring System is an advanced early warning system designed to detect and automatically alert users about potential flood risks.  This is achieved by deploying low-cost, wireless sensors that integrate real-time alerts with satellite communication.  The AWARE Flood Monitoring System play a critical role in the City of Laurel's mitigation efforts by:

  1. Detecting and measuring water level surges before the water causes damage.
  2. Sending alerts for proactive evacuation planning.
  3. Providing historical flood data to improve long-term infrastructure planning.
  4. Reducing financial losses.

Within the City of Laurel, there are six AWARE flood monitors deployed along the Patuxent River and its tributaries.  The monitors take readings every 15 minutes and sends the information, along with a picture, to the City's AWARE system.
