City of Laurel Launches Safe Winter Nights Program to Engage and Empower Local Youth

[Laurel, MD, December 11, 2024] The City of Laurel is proud to announce the launch of the Safe Winter Nights Program, an exciting extension of Mayor Keith Sydnor’s Safe Summer Nights initiative.

The program kicks off on Friday, December 20, 2024, and will be held at the Laurel Armory Anderson & Murphy Community Center, located at 422 Montgomery Street, Laurel, Maryland. The program is free and open to City of Laurel residents ages 12-16, offering a range of activities that promote learning, creativity, and positive social interaction.

Participants will have the opportunity to engage in activities such as: 

  • Financial Literacy Classes provided by Navy Federal Credit Union
  • Computer Coding Instruction
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Interactive Games
  • Other Enriching Activities led by various local businesses

 “Our goal is to create a safe and nurturing environment where youth can have fun, learn, and grow,” said Councilman Jeffrey Mills, Ward 2. “We’re excited to offer a program that strengthens community ties and provides young people with the skills and support they need to succeed.”

The Safe Winter Nights Program also prioritizes community engagement by bringing together youth, families, local organizations, and law enforcement in a positive and collaborative space. The program’s goals include:

  • Promoting Youth Development: Mentorship, counseling, and skill-building activities.
  • Enhancing Community Engagement: Building relationships between youth, families, local organizations, and law enforcement. 
  • Reducing Crime and Violence: Providing a safe space for youth during the critical hours of 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

Registration is now open via the Parks and Recreation ACTIVE Net portal. Families are encouraged to register early to secure their child’s spot. Simply click the registration link next to the desired program date listed above.
