New DPW Traffic Calming Measures Policy

The Department of Public Works is pleased to announce our first standardized traffic safety, speed hump and traffic calming measures policy. This policy addresses the need to define, standardize and incorporate traffic calming measures to be installed in neighborhoods identified by citizens and City staff as having traffic or other roadway or pedestrian safety concerns. This policy includes a process for residents to request speed studies and traffic calming measures in their communities.

Residents requesting speed studies, traffic calming devices, or other roadway safety issues should send an email to the Department of Public Works at  Any services related to increased police patrols, speed cameras, and marked cruiser presence should still be sent to the Laurel Police Department.  When making a request for speed studies, traffic calming devices, or other roadway safety issues please include the following:

  • Your Name
  • A phone number or email address to reach you
  • Location of the street, crosswalk, or intersection identified as having an issue
  • Details about what the issue is

The Department of Public Works will review the request, research any necessary data and conduct studies as appropriate. The requestor will receive a response within 30 days.

You can read the full text of the new policy in the pdf at Traffic Study and Calming Devices Study.
