Auxiliary Police / Volunteers

Laurel Auxiliary Police CarThe Auxiliary Police is comprised of dedicated volunteer officers who assist sworn police officers in a variety of tasks including traffic control, assisting with special events, issuing parking citations, and more. 

Members of the Auxiliary Police wear uniforms identifying them as such and sometimes drive a marked patrol car equipped with yellow lighting. Auxiliary Police are not sworn in, have no arrest powers, and do not carry firearms.

Volunteers in Police Service

Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) Program is designed to involve the community and civilian volunteers in non-enforcement roles within the Police Department and other municipal government roles.

Volunteers generally serve in such functions as:

  • Crime prevention
  • Security surveys
  • Communications
  • Management planning
  • Personnel services
  • Photo lab
  • Traffic safety
  • Training
  • Records
  • Fingerprinting
  • Other tasks

Your police service believes in Community Policing - solving community problems with the assistance of members of the community. We will train you to support police officers, freeing them for tasks that require professional expertise.
