Community Engagement is a partnership with the community involving the full cooperation of citizens and community groups, and this unit acts as the primary point of contact for those groups. Through community meetings, citizen surveys, analysis of citizen complaints, and conversations with residents, officers learn what issues concern neighborhood residents most. The information enables the officers to better respond to the needs of the community and work together to find solutions to the problems.
Laurel Officers are available to meet with community groups, homeowners, and business associations to present advice on crime prevention and safety issues, as well as provide a means of feedback for the police department on community concerns. Use the contact information to the right to contact the Community Policing Unit.
This unit also handles specialized traffic enforcement which includes setting up DUI Checkpoints and Saturation Patrols as well as managing traffic safety initiatives such as Smooth Operator, Distracted Driving, Pedestrian Safety and Click it or Ticket. The CEU unit also manages and maintains the Automated Speed Enforcement Camera program for the City of Laurel.
