Traffic Safety

The Department of Public Works is responsible for installing and maintaining traffic control devices and parking regulation signs along the City’s streets. All regulatory and traffic control signs must be made in accordance with State Standards. Public Safety and Transportation Committee

The Public Safety and Transportation Committee is appointed by the Mayor and City Council. They review traffic ordinances, traffic safety problems, and other public safety concerns. The committee's members include elected and public safety officials along with citizens. This Department provides traffic engineering and staff assistance to the committee. This Committee meets quarterly or as needed and we welcome your comments and suggestions about traffic and other safety problems. Signal Operation

The Department currently maintains eleven (11) traffic signals at various City intersections.  To report potential problems or signals not working please call us at 301-725-0088.

Traffic Safety, Speed Humps, and Traffic Calming Measures

The Department recommends and designs traffic calming on City-owned streets as outlined in our Traffic Calming Measures Policy.  Requests for traffic control devices, traffic calming measures, and speed studies should be sent to the Department of Public Works via email ([email protected]) and include:

  • Your Name
  • A phone number
  • Location of the street, crosswalk, or intersection identified as having an issue
  • Details about what the issue is
