Please join Laurel Mayor Craig A. Moe and the Laurel City Council in congratulating Ms. Valerie Nicholas on her historic election as City Council President on November 23, 2020.

This marks another distinguished “first” for the Councilmember.  Ms. Nicholas is now the first African American female to serve as Council President. In November of 2011, she was the first African American female to be appointed and then elected to the City Council. She was appointed to the Council in June of 2011 to fill the remainder of a councilmember’s term.

On November 5, 2019, Ms. Nicholas was elected to her fifth term, wining the most votes in the City.  To date, she is undefeated!

President Nicholas currently serves as chair of the City of Laurel Tree Board and Chair of the Citizens Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities.  She has also served on the City’s Parks and Recreation CAC as well as the Mayor’s Task Force on Homelessness in the City.

When she isn’t attending a City event or meeting, she can be found volunteering in the community serving our most vulnerable residents-especially the homeless.

Councilman Mike Leszcz was elected President Pro Tem.
