Mayor Craig A. Moe recognizes that although we will be unable to celebrate the 4th of July fireworks this year due to the pandemic, he cautions residents that all consumer fireworks, which includes sparklers and snappers, are illegal in the City of Laurel and Prince George’s County.

City of Laurel Fire Marshal David E. Cope cautions citizens and visitors that the illegal sale, possession or use of any type of fireworks in the City will result in the confiscation of the fireworks and fines up to $250. 

Hand-held sparklers are the biggest illegal fireworks found, which burn at approximately 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, and can lead to permanent disfigurement and scarring. Statistics also show that illegal and poorly discarded fireworks cause an average of 20,000 reported fires per year!

This is usually where we say leave the fireworks to the professionals, but due to the fact that all fireworks have been cancelled in the area, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) “strongly encourages people to find safe and creative alternatives for celebrating the holiday.”
