Mayor Craig A. Moe is pleased to announce the recipients from the 24th Annual City of Laurel Employee Awards and Luncheon that was held on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at the Laurel Armory - Anderson-Murphy Community Center. 

At the ceremony, the City recognized the following employees for their years of service to the City:

5 Years of Service - Lena Grant, Emilia Taulbee, Taylor Seibert, Mary Blankenship, Alfie Acol, Kevin Fillinich, Kristen Phipps and Courtney Clardy.

10 Years of Service - Christian Pulley, Para Sartaj, Clayton Ammerman, Adam Cheek, Jesse Conyngham, Sean Fabel, Richard Blankenship, Dave Cope, Erick Nickell, Jenny Carmen and Danny Miller.

15 Years of Service - Erik Lynn, Michele Blair, Gerald Wolfe, Thomas Slater, Yasir Syed, Carreen Koubek, David Maczis and Stephen Ivory.

20 Years of Service  - Bubba Taylor, Harold McCall and John Szalankiewicz.

25 Years of Service  - Tim Van Der Vossen.

30 Years of Service  - Randy Snearly and Denise Blackwell.

35 Years of Service  - Kim Rau

40 Years of Service  - Rob Ferree

45 Years of Service  - Donnie Rutherford

The City’s Team Achievement Award was established to recognize those teams of employees who have made significant contributions to their Department or to the City. This year two teams were recognized:

  • First employee team was Edward Thomas, Darnell Butler, Jan Moss and Joyce Jackson of the Communications Department for work on the live production of the Main Street Festival Parade in 2018.
  • The second employee team was Sgt. Jesse Conyngham, Cpl. Zachery Berry, Det. Kevin Fillinich, PFC Karena Jackson, Det. Ashley Swardarski, PFC. Edwin Monarrez, PFC. Matthew Zimmerman, Det. Kezzi Henderson, Det. Joseph Kropff and CPL. Juan Diaz-Chavarria from the Laurel Police Department for their investigative efforts of two unresponsive infants that is now under review by the State’s Attorney’s Office.

The Meritorious Service Award recognizes those employees who have distinguished themselves by making a significant contribution to their Department, to the City or to co-workers during the year. This year the following five employees were recognized for their efforts:

  • Joshua Walker, Parks and Recreation - for enhancing an outdoor area at the Laurel Armory Anderson-Murphy Community Center, by recycling fallen trees from Riverfront Park and creating a wooden table, that was turned into a checker board, and two carved seats.
  • Johanna Carrillo, Department of Communications - for being the first person the public sees, she also handles all mail and recognized a suspicious package and notified the proper authorities. The package was determined to be safe and she distinguished herself by providing outstanding service.
  • Sgt. Jesse Conyngham, Laurel Police - for his outstanding leadership as supervisor for all of the Laurel Police Safety Training. It is this leadership that helped the Laurel Police move into the scenario-based training like defensive tactics and active shooter awareness.
  • Courtney Clardy, Public Works -  for his work with maintaining street trees, replacing trees that need to be removed, as well as his work with the Community Rating System that helps the City earn credits that can bring lower flood insurance rates to residents.
  • Mahapara Sartaj, Information Technology -  for her intense focus on cybersecurity for the City of Laurel. Much of her day is spent evaluating threats and taking action to mitigate any creditable threats.

The Employee of the Year Award recognizes those employees that promote excellence in public service and have displayed the highest standards of performance and conduct. This year the following five employees were honored for their hard work:

  • Garry Weese, Public Works -  for streamlining the Commercial Refuse Route, which helps save the City time and money, as well as his diligence in noticing when businesses were not putting out their receptacles and had staff determine if service was still needed for that business.
  • Brooke Quillen, Economic and Community Development -  for streamlining the Historic District Commission approval process and creating a comprehensive informational packet for new Historic District residents. She also coordinated a Spanish HDC certificate to accommodate our Hispanic Community.
  • PFC. Nicholas Cahill, Laurel Police -  for enforcing Maryland Traffic Laws with an emphasis on DUI enforcement, he had 38 DUI arrests in the past year. And in July 2018, during one of his traffic stops, he recovered a large amount of illegal narcotics and took two dangerous drug dealers off the street.
  • Thomas Helms, Public Works - was instrumental in getting the flashing beacons, speed radar signs and flashing LED stop sign installed throughout the City, as well as the installation of the Memorial Garden at the Laurel Municipal Center. He also trains the crews to understand underground utility markings that enhances digging safety.
  • Yasir Syed, Information Technology - for completing two significant projects for the City, with the first being new firewall software to prevent intruders from roaming our virtual network and the second was the installation of Clearpass, that allows us to manage what devices can connect to our network.

The Kristie M. Mills Leadership Award was awarded to Christian Pulley, the Director of Economic and Community Development. This award was established to recognize a member of the Management Staff who exemplifies and exhibits the highest standard of leadership, which includes supervisory, management and administrative functions, as well as serve the public.

The City’s highest honor, the Mayor’s Award, went to Cpl. Joseph Johnson for his dedication and accomplishments over his long career with the City and his dedication to Community Policing and the residents, businesses and visitors of Laurel.

Congratulations to all the winners and each and every City of Laurel employee for all they do to enrich the lives of Laurel’s residents, businesses and visitors.
