Mayor Craig A. Moe and Marty Flemion, Director of Emergency Services, would like the public to be aware of a Community Emergency Response class being offered by the City of Laurel in the month of May.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a volunteer training program for residents that help them prepare to assist Emergency First Responders in cases of natural or man-made disasters.

The class will be held on Thursdays from 7-10 PM and Saturdays from 9AM-4PM beginning on May 5, 2011, continuing for the rest of the month and ending on Saturday, May 28, 2011. This class, to be held at the Laurel Municipal Center, 8103 Sandy Spring Rd., Laurel, MD 20707, will cover Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Medical Operations, Fire Safety/Light Search and Rescue, Disaster Psychology, Terrorism and CERT and a course overview.  The class will conclude with a hands on Disaster Simulation, which will be held at Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute Training Academy in College Park. For a detailed class list, please see attached course schedule.

This class will help residents better prepare themselves and their families for natural or man-made disasters and provides opportunities to serve their communities by joining CERT organizations. There is no fee, but you are asked to check and make sure you are able to attend all the classes.  Seating is limited, so if you are interested, please call Carreen Koubek of the City of Laurel at 301-725-5300 ext. 2109.
