Mayor Craig A. Moe received information from Baltimore Gas & Electric (BG&E) that they received a $200 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. This grant will help BG&E begin a 3 year project to change electric meters and upgrade gas meters for all BG&E residential and commercial customers. These new meters, called smart meters, are digital and will allow two-way communication between the meters and BG&E via wireless network. This gas and electric modernization project was approved by the Maryland Public Service Commission.

The features of these new meters will be rolled out over time and early benefits will relate to lower operational costs. BG&E expects the modernization will result in more opportunities for consumers to better manage energy use and save money. Though there is no action needed by consumers at this time, to find out what you can anticipate during the modernization, please visit bge.com/smartgrid.

Mayor Moe asks that residents please do not call the City of Laurel as all of this is being handled by BG&E. Any questions you have, please call 410-685-0123 and select the “smart meter” option or you can call toll free at 800-685-0123. TTY/TDD Maryland Relay Service can be called at 800-735-2258.
