The City of Laurel Ad Hoc Census and Ward Boundary Review Committee held its first meeting May 29, 2012. Members G. Rick Wilson, Ward 1 Representative, Rhonda Whitley, Ward 2 Representative and Kimberly Elliott, At Large Representative, met to organize and begin their work to review the City of Laurel ward boundaries from which City Councilmembers are elected.

The Ad Hoc Census and Ward Boundary Committee has been tasked with reviewing the 2010 Census numbers for the City of Laurel and reviewing the City of Laurel Ward Boundaries to determine if adjustment is needed; and if so, to recommend new ward boundaries. The Committee will seek public input regarding the City’s Ward Boundaries on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the Laurel Municipal Center, 8103 Sandy Spring Road. The Committee will include public input in its recommendation to the Mayor.

City Charter Article 600, Section 620(b) requires that City ward boundaries assure reasonably equal representation.  The Committee has asked that three maps be placed on the City’s Web Page, www.laurel.md.us.  One map will show the existing ward boundaries; one map labeled Option A and one map labeled Option B will also be placed on the City’s Web Page.  Option A and Option B show alternate ward boundaries the Committee and public may consider.  The Census Data from which Options A and B were developed will also be on the City’s Web Page.

The Ad Hoc Census and Ward Boundary Committee looks forward to the June 20 public hearing and encourages the Citizens of Laurel to review the materials on the Web Page and attend and participate in the public hearing.
