Mayor Craig A. Moe is pleased to announce that veteran Public Information Officer Pete Piringer will serve as Laurel's Spokesperson and has accepted the City’s position of Director of Marketing and Community Outreach. The Department was added to the City’s budget effective July 1, 2012.

Mr. Piringer leaves the District of Columbia's Office of the Secretary of State as Director of Communications, having served Washington, DC since 2009, initially as the Chief Spokesperson and Director of Public Information for the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department.  He has several decades of public safety experience and has served as the public information officer for several large agencies in the Washington, DC area, including Montgomery County (MD) Fire and Rescue Service, Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department and the Maryland State Police.  He is president of the College Park (MD) Volunteer Fire Department where he has been a member for over 40 years.  In 2007, he served on the Post Incident Fire Review Task Force investigating the nine (9) firefighter ‘line-of-duty’ deaths in Charleston, SC.

Mr. Piringer is highly respected amongst many of the National Capital Region’s governmental agencies, as well as with the media and civic organizations across the Baltimore/Washington region. He responded and was involved in some of the metro area's most notable emergencies, such as the September 11, 2001 attack at the Pentagon, the 2002 DC Area sniper incidents, Hurricane Katrina (New Orleans, La) in 2005, a 2007 multiple firefighter fatal fire in Charleston, SC, and numerous weather events, including the major snow storms that paralyzed the DC area in 2010 and the earthquake in 2011, to name a few.

Mr. Piringer is a devoted public servant, and an active volunteer.  He has served with the College Park Volunteer Fire Department for many years and currently serves as its President.  In 1986 he was the recipient of the Prince Georg's County 'Gold Medal of Valor' and was named Firefighter of the Year, as well as the City of College Park 'Volunteer Firefighter of the Year' along with several other honors.  He made over 100 presentations at professional meetings and conferences on a variety of subjects related to media relations, reputation management and the use of social media.

He is married to his high school sweetheart, Patricia, a nurse administrator at the National Institutes of Health and they have three daughters all of whom live in the Baltimore/Washington area with their families.

Mayor Moe is pleased to have someone with Mr. Piringer’s experience and credentials joining the City of Laurel Government to launch the new Department of Marketing and Community Outreach. Mr. Piringer will begin his first day on the job at the Laurel Municipal Center on October 9, 2012.
