Laurel Juneteenth Planning Committee Meeting – May 10, 2023
May 17, 2023 MEETING WILL BE VIA ZOOM
Meeting commenced at approximately 6:05pm
On Wednesday, May 31st, the Committee will meet at Gude Park. No Zoom meeting on that
day.
Roll call: Chair Ron Peterson. Vice Chair Sandra Choute. Members: Ummie Modeste and Troy
Griffith. Partner, Tsion Habatamu, Prosperity Clinic.
May 3, 2023 meeting notes are available for review.
Video of May 10, 2023 meeting is available.
Please email any corrections to meeting minutes to Secretary Troy Griffith.
Chair Peterson: Spoke with Deejay date and time, number of mics (two) and whether a monitor
is needed
The Cmte will have an interview with Laurel Public Access TV on May 22nd at 10am. Laurel TV
studio can only accommodate one interview and two guests at a time. Which means the interview
needs to be done in two parts. Chair Peterson and Vice Chair Choute will do one part and Ummi
and Troy will do another. Each interview will be approximately 30 minutes.
Program: All plans still remain. All performers have been scheduled and ready to go. Pres. Smith
will introduce the City Council and Mayor Moe will give a speech. Pastor will do invocation and
someone else will do the libation.
Vice Chair Choute will meet with the printing vendor to finalize all printing materials. Also, will
reach out to Laurel’s Communication Department.
Vendors: Sent list of vendors to Laurel’s Revenue Coordinator. Prosperity Clinic will contact
their vendors as well as provide vendors they do have at the moment.
Vendors will be spread out along Gude Park. All food vendors will not be close together to avoid
long lines.
We’re setting a goal to have at least 5 food vendors. We’re running short of any vendors
applying for the Juneteenth festival. If anyone is aware of any food vendors that would like
to participate, please reach out to the Cmte for an application and the payment link.
As we near Juneteenth, we will designate each vendor to their location on park, so Dept of Parks
& Recs is aware of where each vendor is located on the property.
Prosperity Clinic will have priority. We view them as a partner not a vendor, if you will.
Their logo will be added to the save the date cards and any promotional material.
The Cmte will continue to meet weekly, as we approach Juneteenth, if there’s any updates the
Cmte will meet via phone (no Zoom meeting).
Ummi will find out logistics (chairs and tables, etc.) for Main Street Festival (May 20th).
Tentatively, Chair Peterson will be at Main Street Festival from 9am (setup) to 1pm. Ummi will
be present from 1pm to 3pm.
However, we are creating a Google doc to see if any other Cmte members will volunteer for the
Main Street Festival. We can accommodate two person per time slot.
Save the date cards (English/Spanish) may be distributed at Main Street Festival. Original plan is
to send to Laurel residents (renters + homeowners), will look into cost.
Weekly reminders: 1) If you’re unable to attend meetings, please feel free to submit ideas,
suggestions, or comments. 2) all are welcome to have friends and family members volunteer for
the committee either on planning or the day of the event.
Next meeting: virtual on May 17, 2023.
See everyone next week. Meeting adjourned at 6:51pm.
