The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. with Chairman Nicholas presiding. Roll was called with Brent Debnam, Phyllis Anderson, Kyla Clark, Mike McLaughlin, Erin McLaughlin, and Kimberley Rau present.
Chairman Nicholas apologized for the delay in convening a meeting of the committee due to the Covid-19 pandemic. She asked the committee members how they are doing during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Committee members talked about how they have been managing during the lock-down due the pandemic.
Minutes from CAC for Persons with Disabilities Meeting on February 13, 2020, were reviewed.
There was discussion at the last meeting about the services provided in the city for persons with disabilities. There will be additional discussion about this at future meetings.
Chairman Nicholas has found being on the council, working at the hospital, the challenge for people with disabilities is the isolation and loneliness. She reached out to the Maryland Psychiatric Association about the impacts of COVID on Persons with Disabilities. She has requested information for the committee but hasn't received yet.
Chairman Nicholas recently read that the CDC is now recommending wearing double masks.
Chairman Nicholas announced that Lena Grant resigned abruptly for personal reasons. Kim Rau will be serving as staff liaison. Ms. Rau has been asked to contact all the municipalities in the area to see which ones have CAC's for Persons with Disabilities and what projects they have been working on.
During the last meeting in February 2020, there was some discussion about legislation being considered by the Maryland General Assembly. Mike McLaughlin will do so research on the legislation being considered this General Assembly Session that might be of interest to the committee.
Chairman Nicholas said there are quite a few Veterans in the Laurel community that are disabled. She has some information on disabled veterans that she will be distributing to the committee, not just relating to issued they are facing with the Pandemic but other issues such as getting their benefits.
Chairman Nicholas suggested the committee meet every two weeks for now, and then resume the regular meeting schedule of once a month. The next meeting will be Thursday, February 25, 2021, 6:00 p.m. via Zoom.
Chairman Nicholas provided her personal contact information to the committee members should they ever need to reach her, and she offered to provide surgical masks and face shields to anyone that may need them.
There being no further business to come before the committee the meeting was adjourned at 6:48 p.m.
