Update: On newspapers recycle pencils, I spoke with Lou Ann Crook (City Administrator) and she will double check with the Mayor. We may get the money for this project. There is a restriction on how you get into schools and talk with children. We can also provide an information sheet to the children on how to be kind to the environment. Whoever will be partaking will have to get their fingerprints taken. I’m going to include Laurel Elementary, Scotchtown Hill, Bond Mill Elementary and the two-private schools: Saint Mary’s and The Baptist School. Let us talk about this during this the first week of school. Both Laurel Elementary and Scotchtown Hill are considered “Green Schools” in the county.

Laurel is the first municipality to have a recycling program. Michele Blair has been managing the recycling program for many years. I spoke to Lou Ann about including Michele coming to our next meeting to explain what she plans on doing regarding the program. This program is not just for the environment this includes vehicles, roadways etc. sustainability is the bigger picture.

We spoke about posting an environmental tip once a month. Let us talk to Communications about placing this right below the banner on the City’s website. Kyla, if you can submit this by the 15th of each month.

They are anticipating that we are going to have another bad year for crabs. This is after a two-year restriction on harvesting female crabs. They were blaming it on the pandemic. A lot of people do not realize what happens at the watershed and how it impacts the crabs.

I’m in favor of MAGLEV I’m not in favor as to where they want to build it. They are going to take a big part out of the greenway from Baltimore to Washinton. There are few areas in this country that have those types of Greenways. This process will cost $16 Billion dollars and the Patuxent River Commission said we should fix what we have now. The report went to the Administrator of Transportation in Maryland.

The Patuxent River Commission has no money it’s a legislative commission, but they legislated 25 years ago. There are 33 members on the Commission, and it covers all seven counties from Howard down to the Patuxent River. There are elected officials there are scientist, we meet once a month, and we meet with the governor. We are the only river commission in the state of Maryland. The Patuxent River is the only whole river that is in the state of Maryland.

We did not get a bag bill passed this year. The bag bill is that they would outlaw plastic bags that is not biodegradable. There were 500 bags ordered and 250 was given to LARS and 250 was given to St. Mary’s Church. I spoke to the Mayor, the Mayor plan to do something with the Bag Bill for the City of Laurel. There was a camel who died of dehydration due to swollen multiple plastic bags.

Public Works have been doing some research as far as our sustainability and environment program trying to move the vehicles into electric. They do have electric compactors now. We run 19 miles to dumbing field which is not that far. The electric is a lot cheaper than the gas.

Please provide any ideas for assets to the city. If you have any ideas, please send them to me.

We do not have authority over storm water management for the city of Laurel.

Approval of Minutes for February 23, 2021, March 30, 2021, and April 27, 2021.

We have one vacancy and the Mayor will be appointing a new member to the EAC committee.

Meeting adjourned at 6:50PM
