CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. with Chairman Nicholas presiding. Roll was called with Valerie M.A. Nicholas, Chair; Brent Debnam; Kyla Clark; Mike McLaughlin; Erin McLaughlin and Kim Rau present.
On motion by Ms. Clark, seconded by Mr. Debnam, the Minutes of the March 25, 2021, Meeting were approved. Committee looked at the updated website. Will add "recommended reading" on the website.
Brent Debnam provided the committee members with information about the Ethan Saylor Alliance. The Ethan Saylor Alliance was padded in April of 2015 and was aimed at providing increased training for members of law enforcement and other public service entities on specific needs of those with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The main premise of the alliance is that self-advocates take the lead in educating and information the community regarding the specific needs of those with disabilities. The Maryland Department of Disabilities was essentially tasked with forming an alliance of self-advocates, family members, disability related professionals, educator, and members of law enforcement. The next Ethan Saylor Alliance meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 14, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon.
Gas Station App — Information to be added to the CAC's website. Chairman Nicholas asked the Clerk to get the contact information for Josh Basle to invite him to a meeting.
General discussion — Kyla Clark recently saw a story about an autistic teen died of starvation due to multi-system failure. David Almond was one of a set of triplets. She would like to see the CAC do something to make sure this does not happen again.
Kyla Clark expressed her concern about the kids who receive their meals at school, especially during the Pandemic. Chairman Nicholas said seniors also suffer due to food insecurity and loneliness.
Mike McLaughlin said that Erin belonged to a group of school advocates for kids with disabilities that are now pushing for schools to open due to the difficulties kids with disabilities are having with virtual learning.
Kyla Clark suggested a banner on the CAC's website to include tips for Americans with Disabilities to Cope with the Covid crisis. Discussion about rotating the tips on the banner. Kyla will draft the banner and send to Kim Rau.
Next Meeting April 22, 2021, 6:00 p.m.
Chairman Nicholas wants to wait a little while longer to schedule dinner due to the covid numbers increasing.
