The City of Laurel Tree Board was created and established by Ordinance Number 1074, passed by the Mayor and City Council on March 22, 1993. On September 9th, 2002, with Ordinance Number 1383, the Board was updated to consist of five voting members appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. Staff support to the Board is appointed by the City Administrator's Office.

The Board is charged with studying, investigating, and developing an annual tree plan for the care and preservation of trees. The Board is also responsible for developing and maintaining a list of champion trees within the City and investigating, reporting, and making recommendations on any special matters within the scope of its responsibilities.
