Citizen and Student of the Month For February 2008!

Student of the Month

Nominee: James Raymond

     James Raymond is a junior at Mount St. Joseph High School in Baltimore, MD. At MSJ James has been involved in the Campus Ministry, Xavier Group which Community Service Club, Foreign Language Club, Speech and Debate Team, Art Club, Choir, and Drama Club. He has had starring roles in all the fall and spring drama productions at MSJ since his freshman year. In addition, he has helped design and build the stage sets for all the plays. He has also participated in drama productions at Mt. De Sales High School in Baltimore. 

     James has lived in Laurel all his life where he attended Pallotti Early Learning Center. He then attended St. Mary of the Mills School where he was active in Student Government as a middle schooler and was in many of St. Mary’s drama productions. He was also participated in CYO sports throughout grade school. He routinely made the honor roll and sang in the Children’s Choir. Upon graduation, he was awarded the Monsignor Keesler Award, which is given to the student who best exemplifies Catholic Christian values. He also was involved in the youth ministry at St. Mary’s where he participated in plays and organized a haunted house for two years, with him and his peers collecting can goods for the Parish pantry as admission.

     While in middle school, James began participating in Laurel Community Theater. He has been in two Laurel Community Theater plays and has been in six productions at the Laurel Mill Playhouse. He has helped design and build sets and design costumes for these productions.

     He continues to be involved in his parish community at St. Mary’s and the Laurel community at large. He has been an altar server since 3rd grade. He continues to sing in the youth choir and continues to be involved in the youth ministry. He traveled with the Youth Group to Waveland, Mississippi to help clean up after Katrina. Last summer he traveled with the Youth Group to Mexico for a mission trip where they worked with orphans and built a home for an elderly woman. He also has been a Youth Ambassador. He regularly volunteers for Winter Haven during St. Mary’s assigned week. James also is very close to the Sisters at Pallotti Convent and regularly helps them with a variety of chores. James has worked as a life guard at Pallotti Early Learning Center for the past two summers, along with working at Toby’s Dinner Theater and at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland, where he is a student electrician. He continues to work weekends at Toby’s during the school year.
