Valerie M.A. Nicholas, Council Member

Councilmember Valerie M.A. Nicholas was appointed on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, to fill the vacant council seat in Ward 1.  She was elected to her first term on November 1, 2011 and was sworn in to office on November 28, 2011.

Ms. Nicholas has lived in the Laurel community since 2001.  She retired early from the Federal government with over 20 years of service.  During that time, she served two former Presidential Appointees under the Clinton Administration, where she originally came on board as a White House Appointee.  Prior to that, she worked in numerous roles on the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee (Aviation Subcommittee), where former Senator John C. Danforth was the Ranking Member. 

Ms. Nicholas was born and raised in Roanoke, Virginia. She is the founder and president of LOVE IS NOT ENOUGH, INC. (LINE) a non-profit that helps victims of domestic violence.
