Mayor's Summer Jobs Program

We are pleased to announce the third year of the Mayor’s Summer Job Program. We are also proud to announce that the Mayor’s Summer Job Program won the 2011 Achievement Award from the Maryland Municipal League.

The Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program for 2011 is open to Laurel youth who are City residents between the ages of 14 and 16 on the first day of the program (June 27, 2011). Youth in the program must have written permission from their parents or guardians and provide a Work Permit available through their school Guidance Office. Participants will receive $7.25 per hour. Work assignments are intended to be meaningful; to help motivate career consideration, develop good work habits, and promote the City of Laurel. The required dress will be appropriate to the work assignment. Actual employment dates will be from June 27, 2011 through August 19, 2011, a period of eight weeks.

Persons interested in applying may visit the Laurel Municipal Center at 8103 Sandy Spring Road, Laurel, to obtain an application, or they may download an application above once their age and address qualifications are verified. All applications must be received on or before 5:00 p.m. May 20, 2011. All qualified applicants will go through an interview process. Listed below are assignments that program participants can expect to perform in each of the City’s departments. Use this information to determine first and second choice of departments to work in on the application. The stated preference will be honored to the extent possible, but the City reserves the right to make assignments as needed to maximize participation in the program. The “location” given indicates where participants would report for work each day. All positions involve a 20 hour workweek, typically 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, but subject to change by the department you are assigned to. Positions that include work in Microsoft® Word or Excel require that the applicant be proficient in the use of that software. Training will be provided in Laserfiche® for those positions required to use it, but the participant must have basic computer skills.

OFFICE OF THE MAYOR

Location: 8103 Sandy Spring Road, Laurel, MD
The participant will perform routine office duties including answering the telephone, filing, copying, computer work in Microsoft® Word and Excel, research projects, record PSA’s for activities in the Mayor’s Office and other duties as assigned.

CLERK TO THE CITY COUNCIL

Location: 8103 Sandy Spring Road, Laurel, MD
The participant will perform routine office work including copying; scanning ordinances, resolutions and minutes for Laserfiche® electronic storage, compiling hardcopies of the City Charter and Code; indexing miscellaneous printed historic documents, and other duties as assigned.

CITY ADMINSTRATOR’S OFFICE

Location: 8103 Sandy Spring Road, Laurel, MD
The participant will perform routine office duties including answering the telephone, filing, copying, pulling files for archiving or destruction, computer work in Microsoft® Word and Excel, completing ICS-100 training, research projects, and other duties as assigned.

BUDGET AND PERSONNEL SERVICES

Location: 8103 Sandy Spring Road, Laurel, MD
The participant will perform routine office duties with a special focus on scanning financial documents for Laserfiche® electronic storage but also including filing, copying, pulling files for archiving or destruction, special research projects involving tax accounts and business licenses and other duties as assigned.

COMMUNITY PLANNING & BUSINESS SERVICES

Location: 8103 Sandy Spring Road, Laurel, MD
The participant will perform routine office duties with a focus on assisting with the preparation of Rental License Billing, and other duties as assigned.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Location: 8103 Sandy Spring Road, Laurel, MD
The participant will gain practical hands-on work experience in managing computers and enterprise software within a network infrastructure. Participant will configure and troubleshoot desktop and laptop computers, setup and manage network management software on desktops and laptops, provide help desk level support for all City technology and perform other duties as assigned.

PARKS AND RECREATION

Location: 8103 Sandy Spring Road, Laurel, MD
The participant will perform routine office duties including answering the telephone, filing, coordinating paperwork, computer work in Microsoft® Word and assist with organizational duties commonly performed by administrative staff. The participant will also receive training at the front reception desk enabling him/her to cover the front desk for short periods and perform other duties as assigned.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

Location: 811 Fifth Street, Laurel, MD
The participant will perform routine office duties with a focus on preparing parking tickets for entry and filing of parking tickets, red light camera forms, and reports, and other duties as assigned. There will be auditing of reports that are stored in records to assure reports are in proper order.

PUBLIC WORKS

Location: 305-7 First Street, Laurel, MD
POSITION #1 - The participant will perform routine office duties with a focus on improving the current recycling awareness campaign for Laurel residents and creating an America Recycles Day program for the upcoming event in November. Work will include developing education materials for elementary and high school students, contacting local elementary and high schools to gain participation, updating the current recycling PSA and other duties as assigned. Applicants must be proficient in Microsoft® Office and be familiar with web research. Prior experience with recycling programs or courses in creative writing helpful.

POSITION #2 - The participant will accompany and assist the Project Inspector from the Engineering and Technical Services Division on his daily inspections. The participant will learn the procedures and responsibilities required for the maintenance of the City infrastructure. This position will entail a lot of walking, working outside, testing concrete and asphalt materials for compliance to specifications. The candidate should be able to lift 25 lbs.
