The City of Laurel's Electrical Code Enforcement Program applies to all electrical work performed by electrical contractors within the City, including residential, commercial, cable TV and telephone wiring. Under this program, all electrical work must be performed by an electrical contractor holding a valid Prince George's County license. While the City of Laurel does not require a separate contractor's license issued by the City, contractors must obtain an electrical permit issued by the City before starting any work. This permit must be displayed on the job site.
All commercial work requires electrical plans signed and sealed by an architect or engineer registered in the State of Maryland. Some very minor tasks may be exempt from the plans requirement if it is determined by staff that code compliance is assured by the simple nature of the work. Low voltage installation such as fire alarms, security systems, telephone, data systems, control systems, signs and television systems (both cable and satellite dish) are subject to the code enforcement program.
The standard for reviewing and approving electrical work is the 2008 National Electric Code with modifications and amendments listed in Chapter 18, Art. VII of the City of Laurel Code. Completed electrical work requires a rough-wire inspection prior to wall closure. Inspections should be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.
Resident assistance is welcomed in the success of the Electrical Code Enforcement Program. Any suspicious night or weekend eletrical work by an unlicensed contractor, or by a contractor without an electrical permit displayed on the job, should be reported to the Department of Community Planning and Business Services at 301-725-5300 ext. 2238.
