Community Policing is a partnership with the community. Community Policing involves the full cooperation of citizens and community groups. Citizens actively work with police officers to identify and understand the most pressing problems in the community and devise solutions together. Through community meetings, citizen surveys, analysis of citizen complaints, and conversations with residents, officers learn what issues concern neighborhood residents most. The information enables the officers to better respond to the needs of the community. Under Community Policing, citizens can volunteer their time and services to assist the police. They can attend meetings with officers to find resolutions to recurring problems.
A strong partnership with the community was formed in 1996 as the Laurel Police Department took a fresh look at modern community-oriented policing concepts. A greater empahsis was placed on identifying neighborhood problems and then devoting police and community resources to resolve the problems. There was increased interaction with community residents and members of the business community. Officers were deployed more frequently on foot and bicycle patrols with great successs. The Community Policing Unit was formed to enhance the relationship between the Police Department and the community by creating a closer bond and outreach with those we serve.
Laurel officers are available to meet with community groups, homeowners and business association to present advice on crime prevention and safety issues, as well as provide a means of feedback for the police department on community concerns.
