ALERT!
This is a snow emergency update from the City of Laurel Emergency Operations Department. Mayor Craig A. Moe has declared that the City Snow Emergency and City State of Emergency will remain in effect until further notice. However, Mayor Moe lifted the no driving restriction which took effect at 7:00 AM on Sunday, February 7, 2010. Mayor Moe asks that residents continue to remain off the roads as much as possible to allow Public Works to clear the roadways safely.
The City of Laurel Emergency Operations Department and Department of Public Works are working around the clock to clear secondary and side streets. Please understand this is a monumental effort because of the record breaking amount of snow. In most cases, plows are not enough which forces the use of front end loaders which are limited in availability. We are asking for your patience.
When clearing sidewalks, cars, driveways or areas near the street, please do not throw the snow into the street. This creates a hazard for motorists and creates more problems for Public Works when they are clearing the streets.
The City of Laurel Emergency Operations Department is asking homeowners and residents to check their downspouts, drains and sump pump discharges for proper drainage. This record snowfall has buried and hidden many fire hydrants. We urge residents to locate buried hydrants in their neighborhood and work together to clear them of ice and snow.
The Emergency Operations Department is asking residents to please check on their neighbors, especially elderly neighbors, to ensure that they are warm and safe. If you have any questions regarding snow removal, please call Public Works at 301-725-0088. If you are in need of emergency service, Fire and EMS can be reached by calling 911. The Laurel Police can be reached by calling 301-725-3000 for emergency needs.
Additionally, the Department of Public Works is postponing refuse and recycling service for all routes on the Monday and Tuesday collection schedule. Monday’s refuse and recycling collection will take place on Tuesday and Tuesday’s refuse and recycling will be collected on Wednesday. In accordance with the schedule, there are no special pickup collections for this Wednesday.
All Parks and Recreations facilities will remain closed on Monday allowing additional time for the clearing of sidewalks and parking areas. Prince George’s County Board of Education has cancelled school for Monday, February 8, 2010. Accordingly, there will not be any pre-school services at the Robert J. DiPietro Community Center located at 7901 Cypress Street.
Finally, we have been advised, that there will be no Connect-A-Ride or Howard Transit bus services on Monday, February 8, 2010. Thank you.
